Hana Fantasy Flowers
From Stewardess to Steward
Sue and her buddy Kahu at her roadside flower stand in Nahiku, Maui
With camouflage pants, work boots and machete in hand, Sue Cuffe is always ready to conquer the world, or, at least her little part of the jungle. A spry 64-year-young California transplant, Sue is a no-nonsense, get-down-and-dirty kind of woman who bounces around with boundless energy. As owner of Hana Fantasy Flowers, she is a selfless lord of the land and a contributing member of the local community since she made her pilgrimage to Maui in 1974.
This Salem Massachusetts native earned her degree in nursing, but her passion for travel and adventure steered her to fly the friendly skies as a stewardess for United Airlines for eight years. Of all the places she visited, it was Maui that gave her the biggest thrill. Each time her flight landed in Kahului, Sue threw off her heels, peeled off her starched uniform, pulled on her flip-flops and slipped on cut-off jeans and she stick out her thumb. Hitchhiking around the island gave Sue the chance to meet the locals and experience the quintessential laid back Hawaiian lifestyle. When Sue was introduced to the sleepy little town of Hana, it was love at first sight.
When a serious medical condition grounded her career as a stewardess, Sue knew where she needed to go to heal. While life had thrown her a curve ball, Sue decided to catch an opportunity. She packed up her belongings, moved out of L.A. and into Hana. Once back in good health, no grass could grow under her feet. From then on, Sue juggled her time and energy between full-time nursing and tropical flower farming.
For 25-years, Sue's nurtured the people and the land on this piece of paradise in middle of the Pacific. Today, this 4-acre oasis carved out of the lush rainforest in Nahiku Maui is one of Maui's largest tropical flower producers. Working alongside her farm manager Chester Pua, her 4 peacocks, many chickens, and her trusty golden retriever Kahu, Sue doesn't comprehend the concept of "slowing down." While now retired from nursing, Sue spends her time working her farm and helping her fellow members of the Hana community: she's constantly seeking out and sowing new varieties of exotic ornamentals, she's diversifying her farm with crops like asparagus and coffee, she's implementing sustainable agricultural practices and organic farming methods, and she befriends and employees locals who are recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. With a mantra of only growing products that "will keep this special place the way it is," Sue is a true steward of this land, and of this community.
